CELL FUEL It’s a strange way of conceiving energy when you think about LED. They aren’t chemicals in the liquid sense but they are energy and uniquely acting: the mitochondrial chromophores in skin cells absorb red and blue light. To them it is high octane fuel. The fibroblast cells in the dermis layer of the skin that have the job of producing collagen (that gives fullness or a plumped effect) and elastin (offering the skin the ability to bounce back). HOW IT WORKS Light energy may cause photo activity of nitric oxide leading to enhancement of enzymes, electron transport, mitochondrial respiration and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, vital to cell proliferation, survival, tissue repair and regeneration. LUNCH BREAK mystery After just one treatment with a cumulative effect over several weeks with repeated applications that are like sun bathing, with their tanks filled with ATP, the fibroblast cells start dancing the Macarena, producing collagen and elastin like a 20-year old. The beauty of LED is that it is quick and the effects is immediate. You can get a treatment during lunch and no one will know except you will return with 20 years of aging taken from your skin. The result is the complexion is plumped up with new collagen (which pushes the folds of the wrinkles out) and new elastin (which helps to tighten the skin and give it more elasticity). Journalist Zoe Foster-Blake writes LED’s effects provide “a criminal amount of plumpness and glow. I always recommend this to women getting married when they ask, ‘What should I do with my face?,’ because your skin will look heavenly under makeup… and in …photos. I had four sessions over two weeks…” HEALING COLLAGEN The usual treatment in-salon is 2 to 3x weekly for 4-6 weeks. Think of it as taking a sun bath.
“There are lots of hyped up products and brands out there but I like Lumen Photon Therapy,” says Roberts. “I especially like their patented frequency brands and that Lumen is the strongest on the market. I use red LED for anti-aging collagen stimulation. The blue LED is for antibacterial topical healing for acne. I’ve been using Lumen photon in the treatment room now for probably about 12 years. And it has tremendously helped me and my clients. I have clients that use it just once a month it is more beneficial if they can do a series and get it in 2 to 3 times a week but it is safe enough to use every day. And it is so nice that it is not harmful in anyway. So we are not creating wound collagen it’s actually healing collagen.”
